Syros

Syros or Syra is a Greek island located 78 nautical miles (144 km) south-east of Athens and it has about 21,000 inhabitants. Hermoupolis, which is the capital of the island, has always been a significant port town, and during the 19th century it was even more significant than Piraeus. Other villages in Syros are Galissas, Foinikas, Kini.
Hermoupolis stands on a naturally amphitheatrical site, with neo-classical buildings, old mansions and white houses cascading down to the harbour. The City Hall (designed by the famous German architect Ernst Ziller), located in Miaoulis Square, shows the neo-classical style that characterizes the city. This can be best seen in the quarter of the town known as Vaporia where the wealthy merchants and shipowners, lived. Along its narrow streets, stand numerous neo-classical mansions. The "City of Hermes" has numerous churches, an Archaeological Museum which has many finds and a Municipal Library.
Besides its historical capital, Syros is also well known for its beautiful beaches all around the island. Among the most popular is Kini beach where our apartments are located. Syros island can easily be reached by sea, as there are everyday ferry routes from Pireus, or by air through its airport.
